Clump forming iris native to wetlands including Ohio. Bluish purple flowers emerge in late spring above upright sword-like strappy leaves. Wear gloves when dividing rhizomes. Combine with daisies, Coreopsis, Nepeta, and peonies. Plant in well-drained, average soil amended with compost or planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Apply a slow release fertilizer in spring and again midsummer. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Keep the top of their rhizomes exposed and dry. Cut spent flower stems as low as possible. Divide in late summer to early fall every three years.
