Ninebark is a fast-growing, tough, upright-rounded family of shrubs with foliage that holds its fantastic color well for three seasons of interest. It also produces exfoliating brown bark in winter, making it a year-round beauty. Diabolo® displays stunning, deep purple foliage that may become green in high heat or partial shade. Profuse creamy white flower clusters adorn the foliage in summer. This native is adaptable to most soil conditions and durable in its uses as a natural screen, hedge, foundation plant and pollinator attractant. Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water once a week the first year. Prune after blooming. Remove older stems from the base to keep plant attractive. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
