This showy cross between the nativar 'Forest Pansy' Redbud and Texas Redbud displays vibrant pink-lavender blossoms in spring, later unveiling its attractive, dark red to burgundy-purple, heart shaped foliage that provides rich color and texture to the landscape into autumn. This hybrid variety produces fewer seed pods (fruits) too. The Texas Redbud genes make 'Merlot' stand up better to summer heat, but some afternoon shade is appreciated. Use as a specimen tree or in small groups in a woodland setting.
