Switchgrass is an adaptable, native, perennial grass family producing stunning, upright clumps of lance-shaped foliage topped with large, showy, airy flower panicles from August until frost. These robust grasses supply landscape interest and seed for the songbirds. 'Dallas Blues' is a native cultivar that stands out with blue, wide leaves and billowy pink seedheads. Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, nutrient-rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting, maintaining 1" of water, once per week, for the first year. Feed each spring or at the time of planting. Cut back as low as possible late winter/early spring. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
