A columnar evergreen shrub maintained in a spiral shape; sharp needle-like deep green foliage and interesting blue berries. These plants make outstanding tall hedges, natural screens or specimen topiary plants that are drought and wind tolerant. Plant with yellow Willow and dark foliage Barberry. Plant in well-drained, amended, acidic soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Little pruning is needed, as this plant shapes itself nicely. You may remove dead branches any time. When necessary, prune or shear in late winter to early spring, just 2-3 inches at a time. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer, and fall with an acidic fertilizer, according to package directions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
