A graceful, native conifer tree that develops an attractive pyramidal form with slightly pendulous branches covered in short, dark, forest green needles with a white band underneath, and small brown cones at the branch tips. This evergreen species is wonderfully shade tolerant. They add year-round interest, can be a used as a specimen tree or as a tall, natural screen in any shady landscape. Hemlocks are ideal for protected, woodland environments underplanted with azaleas, hydrangeas and Astilbe. They are intolerant of heat and drought, and should be kept evenly moist and mulched.
