Astilbe japonica Also known as False Spirea, Astilbe is a staple for any dappled shade border or woodland garden. A great choice for any gardener wanting to achieve color and texture in shady areas where other flowers won't thrive. 'Elisabeth van Veen' produces vibrant raspberry-purple plumes in early summer above medium green foliage with a reddish tinge. Water well after planting, and maintain 1" of water, once per week, for the first year. Do not let them dry out. Use an all-purpose, slow-release maintenance fertilizer in spring or at planting, and repeat in summer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring every 3-4 years, after cutting back the foliage.
