Hosta 'Sum & Substance' 1 Gallon

Hosta 'Sum & Substance' 1 Gallon

Hosta spp.
Hostas, also known as Plantain Lily, are a large, diverse perennial family of clump-forming plants with bold foliage in various shades of color, patterns, and sizes. Many also produce flowers that exude a strong perfume. Hostas are one of the easiest-to-grow shade plants for the landscape and container garden. 'Sum & Substance' is one of the largest varieties, offering a tropical-looking mound of thick, broad, paddle-shaped, light green leaves up to 20" long each. Fragrant, pale-lavender flowers appear in summer on 44" scapes to attract hummingbirds. This variety is recognized for being the most slug-resistant of all varieties of hosta, due to its rather waxy leaves. Unlike many hostas, it can also handle a sunny environment. Plant in well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Deadhead spent flower stems for neat appearance. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary.
