Hosta spp. Hostas, also known as Plantain Lily, are a large, diverse perennial family of clump-forming plants with bold foliage in various shades of color, patterns, and sizes. Many also produce flowers that exude a strong perfume. Hostas are one of the easiest-to-grow shade plants for the landscape and container garden. 'Halcyon' is a popular mid-sized variety of blue hosta with frosty, blue-green, pointed leaves. It is a superb grower with thick leaves that demonstrate good slug resistance. Pale, blue-violet flowers appear on 28" scapes mid-summer to attract hummingbirds. Pairs well with Hakonechloa grasses, Liriope, and Primrose. Plant in well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Deadhead spent flower stems for neat appearance. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary.
