This hybrid of two Asian species of witch-hazel is a large, upright, vase-shaped shrub that produces ascending, spreading branches covered in bright yellow, fragrant flowers with thin, ribbon-like petals in late winter. Spring and summer foliage is medium green turning golden orange in the fall. 'Jelena' is noted for copper appearing flowers in February or March, which are actually red, orange and yellow on the same petals when viewed up close. Witch-hazels possess excellent shade and moisture tolerance, working well in clay soil. They attract pollinators and songbirds, can help reduce erosion, and make attractive natural screens in woodland landscapes. Plant with Hydrangeas, azaleas, and ferns.
