This small, deciduous, native tree or large shrub produces showy clusters of fragrant, white, fringe-like flowers in late spring. Plants are either male or female - male plants have larger flowers, and female plants produce small bluish black fruits in late summer (if pollinated by a male) that songbirds enjoy. Leaves are bright green and spear-shaped maturing to golden yellow in autumn. Fringetrees prefer moist but well-drained soils, and tolerates tough conditions except prolonged drought. A beautiful specimen or looks best when grouped in the landscape with other natives such as deciduous holly, little blue stem grasses, and Coreopsis.
