A stunning, midsize, weigela variety for the landscape border or for a perennial backdrop with excellent cold hardiness. This showy mound of bright green foliage is topped by abundant, fragrant, dark red to maroon, bell-shaped flowers in spring that the hummingbirds and bees love. Weigelas are easy, perfect performers for sunny spaces, in containers, as low hedges, mixed borders, or foundation plantings. They provide three seasons of color and possess good deer resistance planted along with Junipers, ornamental grasses, and deciduous Holly. Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water once a week the first year. Trim lightly after first blooms are spent to encourage reblooming. Prune to remove winter dieback in spring; do all other pruning immediately after flowering. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. A Proven Winners® variety.
