Venus Fly Trap 3"

Venus Fly Trap 3"

Dionaea muscipula
Perhaps one of the most unusual-looking plants to grow, the Venus fly trap one of the most common carnivorous houseplants you can find. The 'trap' of this plant is actually a modified leaf that traps insects when they make contact with its trigger hairs. The Venus fly trap is not hard to grow, but does require different growing conditions than most houseplants. Plant in sandy soil and keep consistently wet. Supply extra humidity by spray misting or setting on a shallow tray of moistened pebbles. These plants enter a period of dormancy in fall as sunlight levels decrease. Losing leaves and appearing to die, they actually live on below the soil via rhizomes. Watering can be reduced during this time. During the natural active growing season for houseplants (April-September), pick off any flowers as they develop into bloom because flowering leads to seed production, which diverts energy from the plant. Do not fertilize Venus Fly Trap plants.
