Switch Grass, also known as Panicum, is an adaptable, native family of grasses that produce stunning, upright clumps of thick to thin foliage topped with large, showy, airy flower panicles of burgundy to pink from August to frost. These robust grasses supply outstanding landscape interest, adapt to moist or dry soil, are salt tolerant, and produce excellent cut and dried flowers. Use these grasses to naturalize a meadow, butterfly garden or raingarden, wooded landscape edge, or provide seed for songbirds. Combine with butterfly weed, coneflower, and stonecrop sedum. 'Prairie Sky' features powder blue leaf blades which turn yellow and then tan in the fall. Its late summer seed heads are tipped in copper and persist all winter. Taller and bluer than 'Heavy Metal'. Plant in well-drained to moist, average to poor soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. In general, cut ornamental grasses down as low as possible in late winter. Divide in spring when necessary.
