Magnolia is a popular family of spring-flowering plants grown as tall shrubs to medium sized trees. They display showy, fragrant flowers and deciduous, glossy to leathery green foliage, and they're outstanding in the landscape as a decorative accent or specimen plant tolerating clay soil. This U.S. native is a wonderful, later blooming Magnolia forming 2-3 inch wide, creamy-white, 9-12 petaled, sweetly fragrant flowers in May to June that are attractive to pollinators and form clusters of bright red seeds in fall for the songbirds. Dark green, 3-5 inch long leaves have an interesting silvery underside covering a small tree to a large, multistemmed shrub with silver-brown bark. Use as a small space, flowering specimen near entryways and patios to enjoy the fragrance. Plant in well-drained to moist, acidic, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Prune in spring immediately after flowering to control size, and remove stray shoots or damaged limbs anytime. Feed early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
