Also referred to as landscape roses, shrub roses are the easy-care type that bloom freely and have gained popularity with the development of new and better varieties. They are best known for their own-root cold hardiness, foliage that possesses excellent disease resistance, and vigor when it comes to growth and bud & flower formation. Shrub roses suit every garden and outdoor lifestyle from container gardens to landscapes. Firecracker™ is a compact, self-cleaning variety producing brilliant, orange-yellow flowers continously over a long bloom season. Plant in well-drained, amended soil at least 2-3 feet apart. Water well after planting, and maintain 1" of water, once per week, for the first year. Prune down to 6-12" in height in spring after the last frost. Feed at least three times (when fully leafed out, after the first bloom, and again in August) during the growing season with a slow-release fertilizer per label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against the extremes of soil temperature. Deadhead and clean around the base of the plant as much as possible. Keep an insect and disease control geared for roses on hand.
