Magnolia is a popular family of spring-flowering plants grown as tall shrubs to medium sized trees. They display showy, fragrant flowers and deciduous, glossy to leathery green foliage, and they're outstanding in the landscape as a decorative accent or specimen plant tolerating clay soil. Saucer Magnolias are a reliable, spring flowering classic, displaying beautiful, 5-10 inch wide, cup-shaped blooms with purple-pink exterior and blush to white interior in early spring. It also produces3-6 inch long, medium green, oblong foliage over smooth, gray bark. They may also sporadically bloom again in summer. Plant in protected areas with well-drained to moist, acidic, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Prune in spring immediately after flowering to control size, and remove stray shoots or damaged limbs anytime. Feed early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
