White flowers with a red-pink eye appear in abundance mid summer and continue well into fall on this leggy, uprightly branched shrub. A popular deciduous shrub or tree with old-fashioned charm, it's best underplanted with smaller shrubs and perennials, and it makes for a great garden accent. Best pruned in late winter or early spring once the threat of extreme cold has passed, it is a good choice for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Little pruning is needed, other than to control size, as this plant does shape itself nicely. Remove dead branches or trunk suckers any time. When necessary, prune in late winter/early spring; the harder the pruning, the better this plant flowers. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
