Cornus alba 'Bailhalo' Compact cultivar. Upright spreading suckering shrub, native to most of North America. Less agressive spreader than C. sericea. Stems turn red orange fading to purple in autumn and then bright red in winter. Remove ¼ to ⅓ of the oldest stems in late winter to encourage new stems with the best color. Variegated leaves are green with white edges. Leaves turn red in fall. Tiny fragrant white flowers appear in flat clusters in summer, followed by whiteish fruit. Adaptable to many conditions but prefers moist soil.
