A large, broad, native, deciduous shrub that produces showy stems that change from red orange in summer, fading to purple in autumn, and then bright red in winter. Tiny, fragrant, white flowers appear in flat clusters in summer attracting pollinators, followed by creamy white berries that attract birds. Green foliage turns reddish-burgundy for excellent fall interest. Tolerant of moist soils, excellent in rain gardens or used for erosion control. Combine with other natives such as deciduous holly, Panicum grasses, and Rudbeckia. For best stem color, remove one quarter of the oldest stems in late winter.
