Acer rubrum This medium sized, specimen, shade tree has an attractive, oval canopy. It's prized for producing only male flowers in spring, so no nuisance seeds! Its foliage also turns from a medium green to an intense red to crimson-purple fall color which lasts for several weeks in autumn. 'Brandywine' is the attractive offspring of two popular red maples, 'October Glory' and 'Autumn Flame'. This makes a great choice for a street tree, lawn specimen, or as a transition between woodlands and the home landscape. A very adaptable Ohio native. Plant in average to moist, well-drained, slightly acidic, amended soils. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Little pruning needed; shapes itself nicely. Remove dead branches or trunk suckers any time. Sap flows heavily in late winter/early spring, best to avoid heavy pruning at that time. Fertilize in early spring and mid-summer with a multipurpose slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect.
