A rapid-growing vine that climbs by tendrils, woody in its southern range but dying to the ground in winter in the northern range. Green leaves have three lobes, and turn yellow in fall. Fragrant flowers appear in summer, followed by fleshy egg shaped fruits caled maypops. Ripe maypops may be eaten fresh or turned into jelly. 'Dossey's Purple' was selected and named by plantsman Dewey Hollister of Cincinnati, Ohio. The large and exotic flowers of this cultivar have beautiful violet filaments displayed against a background of soft bluish-white petals.
