Purple Love Grass is native to much of North America, including Ohio. This ornamental grass produces flat green leaves forming a basal clump to 10 inches tall. Red-purple flowers emerge in August, forming a showy, colorful cloud up to 2 feet high. In fall, as the foliage turns shades of purple and bronze, the flowers dry and brown, and may detach and roll like a tumbleweed in the wind as a method of seed dispersal. Use in borders or meadows with other native plants such as Aronia, Echinacea and Coreopsis. Water well after planting; maintain 1-inch of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
