Ponytail palm aka elephant's foot features a sleek, woody, bulb-like trunk and long, lush green, curling hair-like leaves that make a stunning visual statement reminiscent of a ponytail. Technically, this species is not a palm; it is instead a member of the succulent Agave family. It can be grown as an easy-care Bonsai plant, a "thriller" in a mixed succulent garden, and is also considered non-toxic, pet safe from the ASPCA. Grow in average household temperatures, 60-80 degrees F. In northeast Ohio, tropical plants can be grown indoors year-round or can be enjoyed outdoors in the summer and returned inside during the winter. Prefers well-drained soil, cactus mix works nicely. Water thoroughly then let the soil dry-out between water applications. Fertilize with a slow-release plant food in spring and midsummer, or apply a cactus plant food following label instructions. This plant likes to be rootbound; only repot when clearly outgrown its container.
