Pawpaw is a native fruit tree that develops wine-red flowers in spring that mature into light green, potato-like fruit ripening to a yellow-brown for late summer harvest. Its large, tropical looking foliage, and exotic fruit flavor that resembles banana with notes of mango or papaya makes this a unique edible plant. 'Mango' is a slaection with large, early ripening fruits. This small tree or large shrub prefers well-drained but moist to wet, acidic, rich soil in wooded areas near waterways, spreading by root suckers, forming colonies. Pawpaw is not self-fertile and requires a second plant for pollination.
