Betula papyrifera

An iconic, native, multiple stemmed or "clump" trunk tree that produces medium green foliage turning brilliant gold in autumn on an oval canopy. Its distinctive, white exfoliating bark and black lenticels (pores) provide excellent year-round interest. This large, specimen tree prefers acidic, moist to well-drained soil with some clay soil and salt tolerance. Underplant with other Ohio natives such as chokeberry, red-twig dogwood, butterfly weed, and cardinal flower. 'Select' is a superior strain of paper birch.
