This delectable stir-fry favorite has a sweet, mild flavor. It produces sturdy bunches of thick white, celery-like stalks topped with deep green, round foliage that is excellent in salads too. Whether it's used fresh out of the garden, steamed or cooked, it is easy to grow in containers or in a small garden; possessing excellent heat and cold tolerance for two plantings, early spring and mid-summer. Plant with other cold crops and cabbage family members; avoid tomatoes, peppers, and beans. Plant in sunny, well-drained, nutrient rich soil or containers amended with organic matter. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week throughout the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, following label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
