This late spring to late summer-blooming bulb family is steadily increasing in popularity. New varieties of Ornamental Onion produce full clumps of green to blue-green, onion-scented foliage and a variety of spherical to cone to clustered blooms. The flowers make an excellent addition to spring-blooming bulb gardens, cutting gardens, and sunny containers. 'Millennium' is an award-winning ornamental onion variety that produces a compact clump of glossy, bright green leaves topped with abundant, 2-inch, vivid rosy-violet, rounded, drumstick-like flowers on strong stems in mid to late summer that the pollinators adore. These perennials make an excellent pest resistant addition to rock, herb, and cutting gardens, and sunny containers. Plant with coneflowers, geraniums, daylilies, daisies and grasses. Plant in well-drained, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1-inch of water, once a week the first year. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide after blooming when necessary.
