This member of the Mallow family produces spineless, 3-4 inch long, medium green, slightly fuzzy, ribbed but succulent seed pods that can be pickled, sauteed, roasted, and batter-fried, also providing a sweet, grassy flavor and creamy texture in gumbo and stew. Its creamy yellow mallow flowers are an attractive, edible flower with a sweet, mild flavor too. Early maturation and first harvest around 58 days; continue to pick throughout the growing season. Dry and store some pods for planting seeds next year. Plant with garden companions like cucumbers, radishes, and peppers. Grow in sunny areas or containers planted in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain even soil moisture. Feed with a slow-release fertilizer like Garden-tone® during the growing season per label instructions. Pick okra at 3 inches in length for best flavor. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds and retain moisture.
