State tree of Ohio with a broad, round to oval habit, and one of the first trees in spring to leaf out producing large, bright green foliage, and one of the first to drop its golden brown leaves in early autumn. Buckeye trees produce large clusters of greenish yellow flowers in May that attract pollinators, and later mature into spiny fruit that contain glossy, brown seeds with a tan scar (aka buck's eye). These trees are best planted in woodland areas as an understory or shade tree, resistant to rabbits.
