Northern spicebush is a medium to large native deciduous shrub that prefers moist soils. It produces fragrant green-yellow flowers along the branches in early spring before the light green leaves appear. Fall color is yellow. Leaves are fragrant when crushed. Plants are dioecious (either male or female), with only females producing berries in the presence of a male. Bright red fruits are attractive to birds.
