Aka Chinese or celery cabbage, 'China King' produces miniature or baby, 8-18 inches tall, cylindrical heads of crinkled, tender, pale green leaves with distinctive white veins and midribs weighing up to 2 lbs. with a yellow interior. This milder, slightly sweet tasting cabbage is a cross between lettuce and cabbage. It is widely used in Asian dishes from kimchi to stir-fries, but is also excellent in slaws, salads, soups, with dumplings or noodles. Perfect for home gardens and small spaces, a cold crop that is slow to bolt, tolerant of warmer conditions, grown for early, mid and late harvest. Plant with other cold crops and cabbage family members; avoid tomatoes, peppers, and beans. Plant in sunny, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil or containers amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week throughout the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, following label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
