Magnolia 'Butterflies' 10 Gallon

Magnolia 'Butterflies' 10 Gallon

Magnolia hybrid

Magnolia is a popular family of spring-flowering plants grown as tall shrubs or medium sized trees. They display showy, fragrant flowers and deciduous, glossy foliage, and they're outstanding in the landscape as a decorative accent or specimen plant tolerating clay soil. 'Butterflies' is a beautiful, deciduous, hybrid cross between the native Cucumber Magnolia (M. acuminata) and Chinese Yulan Magnolia (M. denudata). It is best known for its 4-5 inch wide, profuse, lovely, non-fading, buttery to pale yellow, lily-like flowers with a light lemon fragrance in early spring. Its 8 inch long, dark green, elliptical leaves cover a compact, pyramidal habit that can produce a single trunked specimen or a multi-stemmed large flowering shrub that possesses excellent tolerance to heat and cold. Underplant with Hellebores and azaleas. Plant in well-drained to moist, acidic, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Prune in spring immediately after flowering to control size, and remove stray shoots or damaged limbs anytime. Feed early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
