First Editions® Virtual Violet® Lilac blooms in late spring when raspberry purple buds open to fragrant, violet-colored flowers, contrasting against fresh green foliage. The mature size of 6-8 feet tall and 5-7 feet wide makes this plant perfect for foundation plantings, but it can also be used en masse or as an informal hedge where you don't need a lot of height. Virtual Violet® is incredibly cold hardy, thriving even in Zone 3. Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water once a week the first year. Prune in spring immediately after flowering to control size, and remove stray shoots or damaged limbs anytime. Feed early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
