Leucothoe 'Coast' 3 Gallon

Leucothoe 'Coast' 3 Gallon

Leucothoe axillaris
Aka Coastal Leucothoe, Drooping Fetterbush or Doghobble, this unique, slow growing, evergreen shrub possesses a mounded, arching form with bronze new foliage that matures to a leathery yet glossy dark green then burgundy in late fall through winter for year round interest. In spring, it produces pendulous clusters of white, Lily of the Valley-like flowers that can be cut and arranged. Use in woodland borders or along river banks, as a low, deer resistant hedge, or planted with other shade loving plants such as Rhododendron and ferns. It can be pruned after flowering to maintain a smaller form. It prefers some shade plus well-drained to occasional wetness, amended, acidic soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Prune in spring immediately after flowering to control size, and remove stray shoots or damaged limbs anytime. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer and fall with an acidic fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
