Delphinium are tall, cottage and cutting garden perennials that produce strong, showy stems loaded with brilliantly colored flowers. They prefer cool, mild summers, and slightly akaline soil. Staking is recommended, as the flower spikes may topple and break from rain or wind. Plant in a sunny garden, back of the border with other cut flower varieties. 'Summer Nights' is a dwarf grandiflorum variety that is low growing and which produces loose sprays of single, spurred, satiny, midnight-blue flowers for several weeks from early to late summer. Plant in well-drained to dry, nutrient-rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week, for the first year. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring every 4 years.
