This spectacular Chinese dogwood tree produces an abundance of showy, creamy white flowers attracting pollinators in late spring followed by large, edible, red fruit that songbirds enjoy. This variety develops an attractive, vase-like to rounded habit covered in clean, green, pointy oval foliage that turns to a lovely scarlet-red color in autumn. Its mottled to peeling gray bark adds winter interest. Plant in well-drained to moist, acidic to neutral, amended soil. Kousa dogwoods are generally more weather and disease resistant than Floridian Dogwoods. Use as a specimen, street tree, in woodland gardens, and in shrub borders with azaleas, Astilbe, and ferns. Water well after planting; maintain 1-inch of water once a week the first year. Little pruning needed; shapes itself nicely. Prune after flowering if needed. Remove dead branches at any time. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer and fall with an acidic fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2-inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
