Kobus Magnolia is a deciduous medium sized tree or large shrub native to forests in Japan. They display showy, fragrant white flowers in March before the leaves emege. Foliage is large, glossy and dark gree, fragrant when bruised, but the yellow brown fall color is not a plus. Plant in well-drained to moist, acidic, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Prune in spring immediately after flowering to control size, and remove stray shoots or damaged limbs anytime. Feed early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
