King Sago Palm 10 Inch

King Sago Palm 10 Inch

Cycas revoluta

Sago palm aka King Sago aka Japanese funeral palm offers an impressive dose of prehistoric drama, given it has been in existence since before dinosaurs, much like ferns! Native to the southernmost island of Japan, these plants are sometimes described as living fossils. They feature a squat, extremely slow growing habit, dark green fronds with blunt needle-like leaflets. The plant is technically not a palm but, rather, a distant relative of cone-bearing conifers. Avoid overwatering, wet feet, and allow the plant to dry well between waterings. Palms are commonly used as floor plants in large living spaces, make excellent "thrillers" in an annual container garden, and can provide shade on a sunny porch or patio over the summer. Combine with other trailing tropicals and annuals like ivies, coleus, and Dipladenia planted at its base. Grow in average household temperatures, 60-80 degrees F. In northeast Ohio, tropical plants can be grown indoors year-round or can be enjoyed outdoors in the summer and returned inside during the winter. Prefers well-drained soil, a 1:1 mix of potting and cactus soil works nicely. Water thoroughly, keeping soil slightly dry between water applications. Supply extra humidity by setting the plant on a shallow tray of moistened pebbles. Fertilize with a slow-release plant food in spring and midsummer, or apply a palm plant food following label instructions. Palms like to be rootbound; only repot when clearly outgrown its container.
