Eupatorium rugosum

Native to North America, and related to the taller Joe-Pye Weed, and also called Snakeroot, this plants develops mounds of dark bronze-purple leaves with deep purple stems that provide a sharp contrast to the puffy clouds of clustered, white flowers during summer to late fall that look a bit like Ageratum. Leaves darken as the season progresses. This plant reseeds heavily, is very clay soil tolerant and has excellent deer resistance. Combine with milkweed, Lobelia, and Asters. Plant in well-drained, but moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
