An unusual, small to medium-size, deciduous tree that provides year-round interest in the landscape with a narrow, pyramidal form covered in dark green foliage that matures to attractive shades of red, orange, and burgundy in autumn. In summer, its showy, camellia-like, white flowers with golden centers appear. And for winter, its exfoliating, reddish bark stands out. Use Stewartia as a specimen tree in moist, protected or woodland sites avoiding heavy, clay soil and hot, dry areas. Plant with Hydrangea and Astilbe.
