This Japanese tree lilac is a small, deciduous tree that is extremely cold hardy, developed in Minnesota. It produces an upright, oval habit covered in dark green, heart-shaped foliage that is covered in creamy white, softly fragrant, 12-inch long, flowering panicles in summer. Blooms appear later than most other lilac species, rarely affected by frost, extending the flowering season, and great for cutting. 'Summer Storm' is faster growing and more compact than other tree lilacs with the same attractive reddish-brown bark providing winter interest. Tree lilacs make excellent flowering specimens and street trees, are showy and fragrant attracting pollinators, and tolerate clay soil and urban conditions. Plant with peonies, lavender, and boxwood.
