This variegated Jacob's Ladder produces a dense, colorful mound of medium green, fern-like foliage edged in brilliant gold, and is topped with periwinkle blue, cup-shaped flowers in late spring into summer that are attractive to bees. Jacob's Ladder is a shade garden classic and will burn in too much sun. Grow this deer resistant perennial with Astilbe, bleeding hearts, Heuchera, and Hosta. Plant in well-drained, moist to average, nutrient rich soil amended with compost or planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Apply a slow release fertilizer in spring and again midsummer. Deadhead spent flowers to promote reblooming. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in late summer when necessary.
