Hazel alder is a fast-growing small tree or shrub that forms thickets near lakes, ponds, streams and rivers in moist soils. White pores speckle the bark, and catkin flowers apprear before leaves in early spring. Leaves are leathery green, wrinkled, and have reddish undersides. Fruit looks like small pine cones and persists into winter, providing food for birds.
