Hibiscus moscheutos Hardy Hibiscus produces a 2-5' tall, rounded, shrubby plant that becomes covered late summer in huge, 8-12" wide, dinner plate-sized flowers. It's an excellent perennial for adding late summer and early fall color to the landscape or containers. 'Dark Mystery' is a variety also known as Rose Mallow, proven season after season to be a superior performer in the Perennial Hibiscus family. Mid-summer through early fall, it displays incredibly dark, wine-purple foliage that contrasts beautifully with its large 8-9" white flowers with cherry red eyes and dark pink veining. Its heart-shaped leaves cover its rounded habit. Plant in well-drained to moist, moderate to nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Remove spent flowers to prolong blooming. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Cut down to 4" late fall. Pinch in early June to control size.
