German Iris or Bearded Iris is known for its large flowers with an upright petals (standards) and trailing petals (falls). The beard is the Fuzzy part on the falls. Its foliage is medium green, thick, sword-like, producing an attractive spiky texture all growing season. Bearded Iris make a wonderful cut flower, thriving in perennial borders or containers, and possess good deer resistance and drought tolerance once established. 'Mariposa Autumn' has early to midseason bloom and re-bloom. Standards rosy violet, white showing in center; style arms rosy violet, edges lemon yellow; falls white ground, rosy violet band; beards white base, hairs tipped violet at end, tipped gold in throat; lightly ruffled; slight sweet fragrance. Combine with daisies, Coreopsis, Nepeta, and peonies. Plant in well-drained, average soil amended with compost or planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Apply a slow release fertilizer in spring and again midsummer. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Keep the top of their rhizomes exposed and dry. Cut spent flower stems as low as possible. Divide in late summer to early fall every three years.
