A popular, dense, mounded, ornamental grass that is a reliable garden plant. This species develops distinctive cream to tan to silver cat-tail or bottle brush like panicles over fine textured, arching, medium green foliage midsummer. Use Pennisetum in mixed shrub borders or small space gardens, in containers and in cut flower gardens. Plant with Russian sage, Rudbeckia, and Sedum. This species may self-sow around the garden; to avoid this simply deadhead or cut back the grass before it's seed heads mature in the fall. Plant in well-drained, average to poor soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. In general, cut ornamental grasses down as low as possible in late winter. Divide in spring when necessary.
