Taxus baccata

A low growing, broad spreading evergreen covered with dense, glossy, light green spring foliage that matures to deep green, flattened, 1.5" long, needle-like foliage that makes this plant ideal for year-round garden interest, low hedges, spilling over rock walls, and foundation plantings. Taxus, in general, are durable, very long lived and easy to maintain, rabbit resistant, tolerant of deep shade and drought, and their fleshy red berries (produced by female plants) are enjoyed by songbirds. Plant with lilac and hydrangeas. Plant in well-drained, amended, acidic soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Withstands heavy pruning in spring before new growth appears. Do any additional shaping or shearing by the end of June. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer, and fall with an acidic fertilizer, according to package directions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
