One of the most popular ornamental grass families, Japanese Silver Grass, or Miscanthus, is identified by its whisk-like inflorescence produced late summer to late fall. Clumps form dense habits that make for an excellent garden specimen or hedge. 'Little Kitten' is a dwarf ornamental grass variety with narrow, arching green foliage and showy, silvery-pink plumes that form in August and dry to tan colored seed heads that persist through winter. It makes a pretty cut or dried flower accent. Plant this grass in container gardens, sunny rock gardens, and place in the front to middle of the landscape for excellent winter interest. Pairs well with Juniper, Gaillardia, Salvia, Coreopsis, Sedum, and Shasta Daisy. Plant in well-drained, average to poor soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. In general, cut ornamental grasses down as low as possible in late winter. Divide in spring when necessary.
