Searching for something that will feel at home in your garden, adding color and fragrance without formality? Plant Legend of the Fall® bottlebrush. This nifty native shrub has the best fall color of any bottlebrush, which is really saying something for a plant that's already well known for being an autumn beauty. In spring, honey-scented white flowers appear. Bottlebrush is one of the most shade tolerant landscape shrubs and thrives even in hot climates. It's a very nice choice for planting under trees. Flowers in April to May, later covered in leathery, blue-green foliage that changes to rich autumn colors of yellow, orange and red. Combine with Hydrangeas, Rhododendrons and spikey ornamental grasses in a mixed border or as a low hedge. Plant in well-drained to moist, amended, acidic soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Prune after flowering to control size. Remove dead branches at any time. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. A Proven Winners® variety.
